The English curriculum aims to provide pupils with the confidence and the ability to explore, investigate and understand their world. English is a core subject and is studied by every pupil at Bensham Manor. Pupils follow the National Curriculum and all units in Key Stage 3 encompass the National Literacy Strategy. There are a wide range of accreditations available in English which include Functional Skills, AQA Unit awards, GCSE and Additional English. Pupils study a wide variety of texts, information material and films from writers and directors from different eras and countries. Educational visits are used to enhance the learning experiences of pupils. Visits include trips to theatres and museums, libraries, The Globe Theatre, London Zoo, Crystal Palace Park and newspaper offices. Homework is given weekly to all pupils in English. In addition to this pupils are encouraged to read at home every evening. We also run regular reading lessons and every teacher is encouraged to offer 15 minutes of reading each day at the start of Lesson 5. We have also introduced Bug Club, an online reading service which tailors books to the students individual abilities across the school. In the English department we use a wide range of software to encourage pupils learning and word processing skills are encouraged and enhanced to improve the quality of the presentation of our pupils work. We have a dedicated member of staff who works with individual pupils to help improve their reading skills both in lessons and through withdrawal.

English is taught by Amy Simmons (Head of English) and supported by Richie Morley. English is also taught by our many Class Based teachers and we also have volunteers who generously give their time to come and hear our pupils read and support in our classrooms on a regular basis
